The Issue
It’s more than just a park, it’s a small piece of land that invokes a mix of both good and bad times but above all it’s a place that is the epicentre of a community with a strong history of caring and involvement.
Sumach-Shuter parkette, has recently gone through a redesign and to that end, the local city Councillor, Chris Moise has decided that the park should be named after an anti-gun advocate with little to no ties to the park or to the immediate neighbourhood.
Residents past and present are unhappy and feel that if the park was to be renamed, it should be after someone who was/is connected with the local community. In a brief but lively June 4 meeting, attendees were able to quickly mention several other names that are deserving of being at least considered.
Chris Moise failed to properly engage and consult with members of our community, he then tabled the motion for renaming at City Council that was approved. But this isn’t over, we are asking for meaningful consultation with between all stakeholders.
We’re asking to to sign this petition if you agree that,
City Council pause the decision to rename the park, until such time as a fuller community consultation is completed.
