In yet another troubling display of disregard for Toronto Centre constituents, Councillor Chris Moise once again bypassed standard City of Toronto protocols by circumventing public consultation on the renaming of the decades-old Sumach-Shuter Parkette.

At the May 22, 2025, City Council meeting, Moise introduced a motion to rename the parkette Louis March Parkette. While Mr. March was a respected Torontonian known for his advocacy against gun violence, the fact remains: residents were never consulted, surveyed, or invited to provide input on this change.

This isn’t the first time Moise has imposed top-down decisions without public engagement — most notably with the renaming of Yonge-Dundas Square. Once again, he has sidelined the residents of Trefann Court, who have stewarded and cared for the parkette for decades, denying them the opportunity to have their voices heard on an issue that directly affects their community.

Located within Trefann Court, Sumach-Shuter Parkette should have been subject to community-driven nominations — honouring individuals with direct, meaningful impact on the local neighbourhood.

Even more alarming, City Council failed to refer the motion to Toronto and East York Community Council, further silencing local input. Only Councillor Brad Bradford stood in opposition, advocating for proper process and public respect.

Unsurprisingly, Trefann Court residents are outraged. A petition is now circulating demanding that City Council reverse the decision and, at minimum, refer the matter to Community Council for proper consultation.
